What went wrong? How could it be that a multi billion dollar corporation was unable to make a single high quality or at the very least above average main series pokemon game? This generation is rock bottom for the series, I can only hope that Gen 9 breaks the cycle, but based on the downfall since Gen 6, I highly doubt it.

I talked a lot of shit about SwSh back when it came out because I was salty about dexit, but I finally gave in and bought it about a year ago and had a blast. The DLC areas were both excellent and give me hope for the map design in gen 9, and the online content was the best it's ever been.
SwSh is now the most played on my Switch.

I feel like nobody up top really wanted to remake Sinnoh. Other remakes were always modernized around the latest tech and gameplay. BDSP is weirdly bare minimum, not even developed by Game Freak itself. But fans kept nagging them for remakes and and making memes about it.

Gamefreak/ILCA basically just gave us Diamond and Pearl but without the retarded forced DS dual screen gimmicks, which is perfectly fine, I wish they did more with it than that but I'll take what I can get if it means being able to revisit them. BDSP is an exact copy of DP, with a few insignificant differences, at least ORAS had plenty of new content, a better team aqua and magma, Delta episode, hoopa’s rings, elite 4 rematch, more megas and of course the primal super ancient Pokemon . BDSP didn’t bring anything new, not even new dynamax or megas or even new forms for dialga/palkia, no new postgame content. Team galactic is exactly the same. This was the laziest edition to the Pokémon franchise yet.

I love Pokémon, at least what it used to be, my favorite Pokémon game is BW2 followed by Emerald and ORAS and HGSS. Gen 8 as a whole is the laziest minimum to no effort game in the franchise thus far, this is not arguable, the dexcut alone is proof enough. Everything else is just adding cherries to this crummy expired cake.

Forced Pokémon amie as well exp share makes all battles a cakewalk no matter what. It doesn’t matter if Garchomp has a choice band when your Pokémon keeps surviving three earthquake in a row with 1 hp, and crits with every move against your opponent. On one hand, Legends exists and is borderline experimental in an interesting way, even if I fucking hate it. On the other hand, it might be like Let's Go in that it's an engine test so I'd consider it a Gen 9 game. But yeah, BDSP is a travesty, and Sword and Shield are just not very good and the DLC does nothing to fix the problems with the base games.

There are some gigantamax forms that you can only get through raids but they're doing one final raid rotation that has them all available and will be permanent until Switch online shuts down.

Unironically this would have been a grea to gen for a battle frontier given how fucking easy comp was to get into in SwSh. If the games looked halfway decent and the models and animations were good people would have overlooked the dex cut but instead they were half assed and the same models and battle animations from X and Y. Gamefreak needs a bigger team and more dev time but they won’t get it because the series sells minimum 15 million copies no matter how bad the games are

I think BDSP would be more accepted among fans if they didn't charge the typical full Switch game price for it. It's an awkward, ugly-looking port of a 15 year old game with the most significant changes made to it being minor quality of life things. It feels like the kind of thing dedicated fans would put together and release for free online, and even when it was first announced it was showed alongside the "real game", PLA, and immediately looked like an afterthought by comparison. It's not "Sinnoh in Gen 8", it's "Gen 4, now on Switch" and compared to the prices of other ports of older games available on the Switch eshop it's extremely expensive for what you get - at $20-30, players would have had more realistic expectations. Maybe that doesn't cover the cost of development, but it's hard to justify anything above that if the quality of the finished product doesn't live up to that cost.
If BDSP has established a new approach to old gens (a basic port and an alternative Legends-style game) then they need to rethink the pricing - but we all know they won't
