imo were it not for the seemingly esoteric quality of gen 1, and the myths/legends that sprouted from it, the initial pokemania wave wouldnt have even survived through 99. that wouldve probably meant gen 2 wouldve been a flop.
even WITH the two back to back homeruns with the first 2 gens, gen 3 nearly killed GF entirely
but nope, they were busted and full of holes, and that kept most of us playing it again and again, trying random shit we heard at school, and talking about it extensively both online and irl for years after the fact.
GB/GBC had quite a few, frankly superior, JRPGs we couldve been playing. but unlike most JRPGs where you beat it and youre done, gen 1 allowed us to not only beat it in innumerable ways, but also break it in even MORE ways
they were lucky they were too incompetent to know how to properly implement memory protection
it literally fluked them into becoming the biggest IP in all of time
