Where Gen 4 excels is balancing story/gameplay, having lots of side features and generally just building on the past Generations to make a game that felt complete (reminder that BW was the first Gen to start removing features en masse to make Gens feel more "unique"). Gen 4 still has the open-ended map design of the earlier Gens, lots of exploration (no, a side route with a dead end isn't exploration, as Unovafags like to pretend), and generally leaves dialogue and exposition in the back seat so the player can immerse themselves and make their own sort of adventure as they discover the world for themselves. Gen 5 started the trend of linear regions with a pre defined path for the story, and bombarding the player with dialogue after every Gym. It's no wonder underage weebs love Gen 5. Gens 1 - 4 is for normal people who actually want to... you know, play the games.
