I don't really care for Gen 5's soundtrack (there are even a few locations where I prefer to just turn the volume down) but the theme for the Unova Link function is so good, I love the disjointed keyboard lead and the lurching pitch bends on the pads

Fair enough, what songs do you dislike? I feel Unova has pretty weak route songs, especially the earlier ones. My favourite Unova route is Route 23 though, too epic. Unova link theme is good.

For me it's the Victory Lies Before Your Eyes theme that plays when you're about to win a gym battle, idk why they don't do this anymore, good dynamic music implementation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6XeeYE73dc

Nimbasa City and Castelia City are probably my least favourite tracks in the Unova games - I can appreciate that they were going for a bright and lively feeling to match the atmosphere of the cities, but it gets grating really quickly. Nimbasa's lead brass instrument is quite harsh, Castelia's isn't as bad, but both tracks feel like they have a pretty short loop point so they become repetitive quickly, especially given the size of the cities and how much time you're likely to spend in them.
(I love Gen 5's bike theme and sometimes choose to ride the bike just for the music, but another thing I hate about Castelia City is that if you navigate it on bike, every time you move into a different area of the city the bike theme cuts out and is replaced by the usual BGM again - that's more of a game design problem than a strictly musical one though)

Talking to people in the town just to add a new instrument to the background music was fucking magical. I really wish they'd do something like that again. There was so much soul in the Gen 5 OST, it was like they were actually trying or something.

It's not that I dislike it as a whole, but that it has the most tracks I genuinely can't stand instead of just feeling indifference towards. It has some good ones, possibly my favourite bike theme in the series, and the Unova Link theme I posted that's one of my all-time favourite pieces of Pokemon music, too. I'll always appreciate its ambition and new approach to sound even when the results don't resonate with my own tastes, but for me the contrast between its greatest hits and worst misses is just hard to ignore.
