I don't mind Rotodex in all honesty. It gives the player a really quirky mascot and its nice for the player to be able to just talk to someone whenever

What I don't like is all the Rotom PCs in the Pokecenters. I wish they just kept those regular PCs. I also think its funny that Rotoms original concept was a ghost that possesed appliances and haunted them but quickly became flanderized as just a quirky electric thing that likes taking over appliances

The reason the Pokedex is just a living Smartphone now is because every past Pokedex design suddenly aged horribly once the Smartphone became a thing. We live in a post-smartphone world, its not 1996 anymore. Non-generalized portable devices just don't make sense anymore.

Pokedex used to be a standalone device to sell toys.
Now it's a smartphone because all kids have smartphones and hello fellow children, we dig it, we're down with young generation, we're, as you kids say, on the flick.

I think it's just because everyone uses phones nowadays.
It was always kind of like a mobile phone or a handheld system. Except for first gen.

There was only one in the games it originates from then it was never able to be caught in-game until XY where it was still a rare interactable.
It became the pokedex in gen 7 where it's not able to be caught which is ironic, and SWSH is the first time it's been most commonly available and it's a 2% encounter.

Surely you don't expect smartphones to stay around forever? They will eventually be outclassed by some other technology, we're not there yet but I can't see them last forever. Maybe that's what Elon Musk plans to do with Neuralink -- it might (and probably will) fail to replace them, but efforts to end the smartphone era are being made.

And that's why the classic Pokedex was fine as it was: it was unique to the Pokemon world, it served a specific purpose and there was no reason to replace it.

They should just scrap the idea of the Pokedex entirely and just have a compendium like BotW and Red Dead 2 have within a menu instead of it being an in-game object. Honestly, it really doesn't even make any sense in the current lore why you have a Pokedex to begin with. In the original lore it was because Pokemon were so poorly documented in the world that you had to go out and document them yourself using some scanning device. But in the current lore, Pokemon have always been there and they're all already well documented in the same sense most common animals on Earth already are. The Pokedex is a grandfathered relic of the era when the lore was still "animals once existed but then Mew appeared in South America and Pokemon came and killed the animals."

I like the phone thing because it makes Pokémon feel even more like magical realism. I think the magical realism inspired setting is the second most pivotal aspect of the franchise's appeal. As opposed to being set in a medieval fantasy or futuristic setting.

The whole franchise was based on the real life fad of insect collecting. The early generations also benefited from the dinosaur fad sparked by Jurassic Park. Pokeballs were ripped straight from Ultraman, specifically Ultraseven's Capsule Monsters.
Gen 2 added breeding and baby Pokemon as a reaction to the Tamagotchi fad that was at its peak when it started development.
Pokemon has always been a monument to shameless consoomerism, trend-chasing and copying.

that's another thing about the rotom phone. Do you keep the specific rotom and just transfer it to the next phone or do you get a whole new pokemon when you recycle.

Honestly the biggest thing for me is I'm just not a fan of giving the player a pokemon they can't use on their team. Rotom being such a competitively viable pokemon makes it even worse.

Ruined for a while, now. As far as the mainline games go, Gen 5 did a lot to degrade the world to being a global Pokémon theme park, and we've been stuck with it ever since.

In an early season of the ashnime they made a Porygon episode that triggered epileptic attacks.

I think Sword and Shield implies that you don't physically have a Rotom in your phone, you're connected to one and it only manifests in it when necessary.
At the very least that is how the PCs in the Pokémon Centers work, don't see why it wouldn't be the case for the phone too.
Somewhere there's probably a server that is actually a box full of Rotoms connecting and disconnecting from these devices all the time.
