In games, items on the ground looked like Pokeballs for some reason, which is why Voltorb was the perfect mimic in those games.

Yes, the player sees items on the ground as Poke Balls, but the actual characters don't. That's what I mean. It only worked as a mimic on a meta level, there's no way anyone in-universe could ever make that mistake.

It's this game's mimic in the sense that it vaguely matches that role they design once per gen. It isn't a literal mimic though. It's based on cursed chests/possessed items. It possesses people.

you can catch the chest form in SV, but the roaming form will run away and drop a coin instead(think Korok seeds). When you get 999 coins you evolve the chest form

At the moment, it seems the chest form can be caught in SV, but the roaming Form will only be catchable via Go. The chest form is the one that evolves though
