Wasted opportunity to not bring him back as a Champion. He clearly still battles and Cynthia is able to balance her research alongside being a Champion. Nobody is simply a Champion besides shitters like Iris, Ash and Leon.

It really is super weird, he's literally the most logical character to shill as a champion as he's pretty much the most reoccurring "champion" besides Cynthia/Red.
And will realistically get more and more appearances in the games over time.

And i mean his aces don't overlap with other champs unlike Alain, suppose Alain was a jobber and you can't treat Gary the same way though.

My comment is on brand consistency, you can easily bullshit a "oh i did this to research shit".
Its logical to present Gary like his game counterpart to an extent. Unlike Ash, Gary is still very recognizable as his original game version in multiple ways.

Yes obviously it's stupid to completely overwrite his anime plotline with the game personality but thats not exactly what is being presented here.

Gary doesn’t care about being a champion anymore and decided to dedicate his time being a researcher. I’d argue that this does come out of nowhere and didn’t get as much build as it should have but during AG/DP he was making progress on that goal. He also got out ranked by Ash in both leagues.

Or you could just have appear to join Project Mew which is a research organization. Which is exactly what the show does. The current season is shit but the one thing it gets right is Gary and I don't know why people would want them to ruin that.
