Pokemon really should stop basing its regions on real life regions.
Every single time a region comes out inspired by a geographical location people bitch and moan that things aren't faithful to their real life equivalent, ie England not having a desert. It also warrents people making a stink to regarding pokemon themselves, ie people getting mad the designers are blending both Spanish and LatAm cultures in designs. If a place is fictional you don't have to worry about that.
It's pretty rare to find a fictional land with absolutely no real life inspiration but it's usually not blatant, as it'll stick out in the experience. While you play XY, you don't see the Lumiose Gym, you see the Eiffel Tower. I feel like the first four or even five (because let's be real, Unova started as being based on NYC but branched out to all of America which is fucking huge) resonated with people more. The first four regions were based loosely around regions of Japan, which the developers were obviously familiar with. That allowed them to not necessarily copy elements of said country, but fill the regions with memorable places for your journey - Mt Moon, the Power Plant, Ruins of Alph, the Abandoned Ship, Meteor Falls, the Old Chateau, you get my picture.
I guess it would require more creativity, which modern Pokemon is lacking.
