But that's correct. Difficulty is not a selling point of Pokemon, so the easier the games are the more people they can appeal to.

Just way for mods, removing friendship boost is probably as simple as forcing its value to 0 or skipping the functions that checks it, reenabling set mode its just skipping the dialog box and auto setting the button callback for the function "keep pokemon", both are probably very simple mods.
