"I don't know if that person works here" does work, sure, but it's a lot less natural in terms of speech.
I don't give a shit about the "hurr non binary" whatever, but "they" as a singular-person pronoun has been in use for centuries. To deny such just makes you look like a frothing-mouthed loon.
