You nerds are overreacting. Protean is still great, just requires more of a brain now.

You still get to have STAB on any move of your choosing and switch your type for defensive purposes, you just need to think ahead more when staying in long term. The core use of the ability is still in tact. It's still really strong.

So did old Protean. It was one of the few, if not the only, skill-based ability that required both skill and intelligence to overcome and to use. It was perfect.
Now any random retard can just outplay Protean because the Protean user is now forced to switch out afterward. It's stupid.

Not saying that they don't have a charizard bias, but hasn't Charizard never been competitive? I consistently see him placed low-tier, but I don't play competitive, and haven't played since gen 5.

There was always an optimal choice to use with Protean, you just chose whatever was best for the current MU you were facing. I love Greninja and Protean, but that shit was not complex at all.

Now, if you're not planning on switching, you need to actively think about what the best choice would be for multiple turns. Which, to be honest, isn't even really what Greninja wants to do anyways, so its not impacted much realistically.

Protean only activates once per switch in. You’re stuck as whatever type the first move you use is, and lose the ability to get stab on the others without switching greninja (and presumably cinerace and the grass cat) out and back in

Also, I used Keckleon with protean for one of my XY battle spot teams and I was thinking of bringing it over to gen 7 to start battling with, now, even if keckleon is in gen 9 in the first place, he’ll be ruined again.

Greninja was impervious to OHKOs thanks to og protean. If his move pool was set up right you could rotate your type to where Greninja wasn't weak to anything and thanks to his speed your opponent with secondary options couldn't do shit because you could just switch types again to make that next move use less if the opponent isn't some how already dead after two attacks from greninja. Greninja was "dps check" the and everyone would loose it. That's why he was ban.
