personally the last time I liked all the starter options were gens 1 and 2. Since then some of the choices have put me off for different reasons, but I could still say they fit the pokemon look, even if I thought the design was too busy or ugly.

Gens 8 and 9 have broken an entirely new low

alola's starters are better than unova's.
i was here when the meltdown occurred. what matters more is how people feel in the longer term. 7 started a bad precedent of "animal, but bipedal and resembling a human noun" but at least it was a good iteration of it
