GameFreak can't argue with Charizard's popularity, but they will certainly try. They do everything in their power to make people hate Charizard, they make him job like crazy, and yet people still love him, because his design is just that good. Because they hate Gen 1 as a whole and neither Venusaur or Blastoise are popular enough to override their hatred. Charizard can't be caught in the base game, he is only there because an executive said, "Wait, where the fuck is Charizard!?!? He makes me my money!" So the troons were forced to put him in by technicality.

The premise was that hes a pro battler now and can make any pokemon top tier i guess. I mean in the first few episodes he tossed out mr mime just because he had no other pokemon with him at the time and had him break dancing dodging attacks. He also did battle alot of people off screen and had 0 losses until bea and they did that montage of him losing to all the octopus/squid mons. Its a dumb premise i know but its just how it works.
