Agreed. It just looks goofy to be having an "epic" battle, and one of your poke's secret techniques is putting on an ostentatious and ugly hat. It's just gaudy, and looks like shit.
I don't really get the mechanic, desu, but aesthetically, it could be much better.

Why not just have them with an aura with an icon of the type next to their name or somewhere on the screen. Do you really expect anyone to guess what the rock type tera hat is off the top of their head or the normal type without having seen trailers?

I think they work better on the cover legends cause they seem at least relatively smaller on them. Reetardkun's stream at least showed Teradrago Miraidon and it wasn't as distracting.

Guessing types is part of the gameplay.
When you play Pokemon red for the first time nobody tells you that Gyarados is a flying type, you have to find out by fighting it or getting one.
