static images must be composed. ...well, I guess they could all be flat mugshots of all pokemon, head-on; but that hasn't been the art design for sprites. Sprites (especially non-animated ones) need to be designed in a manner to GIVE the pokemon personality as well as artistic motion.
Artistic motion being the feeling that a pokemon is actually mid-movement within the piece, making it feel more alive.
For static images, in other words, SPRITES, this is where personality comes from.
In comparison, 3D models need to maleable. They ARE the soulless mugshot, because the understanding is that a camera needs to view them from every angle, and the 'soul' will come from any animations applied to the model.
Attack, sure. But we've seen it mostly in Pokemonamie, and animations in the 'petting' minigames.
But when the design philosophy changes to take away COMPOSITION, as in, how the artist composes the lines, shapes, colors, etc into a flat image, you lose soul.
