Yeah it was always the most fun for me as well with the battle facilities and regi stuff

Probably helps that all the romhacks are made with gen3 engine as well

This generation changed the art direction drastically, much more than any other generation before. Some of the designs are good, some less so, some are horrible, the point is that they are no longer "pokemon".
Look at Grafaiai, it looks like an alien from Lilo and Stitch, to name one.

There were shades of it last gen; Stonjourner is an Adventure Time character.
Basculegion's style is more like a Capcom game than Pokémon and is more of an homage to Basculin than something related.
Eternatus is literally an Anti-Spiral.

I'm all for diversity in aesthetics but you can't literally slap Finn from Adventure time into Pokémon; that doesn't make sense except in crossovers like Smash Bros.

I miss when Pokémon were "pocket monsters".
Animals existed, proven by the frequent references to them. Pokémon were something supernatural and infrequent, like yokai. They had an ephemeral quality to them that meant not just everyone had them; you had to be dedicated to training them to keep them in check.
