it feels really forced it, I did not know it was a thing until i had every exam unlocked, and at that point it was just mashing A and answering piss easy questions. There should've been a class each time you beat a Gym or Titan or Team Star member if they wanted it to actually be a main thing, otherwise the whole school setting seems phoned in.

I think this is probably why. Stadium 2 still did tutorials the best to this day. FRLG's Help System and Teachy TV is also up there.

Persona wasn't the first game set in a high school but particularly Persona 3 was the first game to gamify the setting to such a degree, at least that I'm aware. Tying character progression into taking classes and making friends and shit, that stuff was new I think.

Socializing in Persona was an entire questline for those NPCs, the social mechanic was barely existent and could literally be ignored at the expense of adding more grind to finishing the quest. Just because it uses a word doesn't mean it's actually the same thing in every fucking game.
