It's one of those old man names the same way old women are always named something weird by today's standards. like "Gertrude". Almost nobody uses a name like that for their children as a first name these days. It's rare finding a guy named Larry under the age of 30 or so, which I guess makes sense since this guy is an ossan.
That being said, I wonder what his names in other languages are. Especially since he seems to specifically be a Japanese salaryman. It's not uncommon for people from overseas like exchange students or immigrants to adopt a name that fits in better with the primary language of the country they're in. Could bypass the weirdness of "Larry" being everyone's grandfather's name by saying his real name is his Japanese one and Larry is just a name he picked because it was easier for other people to say and it seemed very ordinary, even if a little dated.
