As with most things /veepee/ sees done poorly, they'll assume that it's a quality intrinsic to the medium itself (see "hurr durr pogeeman cant work in 3d"), without considering the fact that it might've just been done shiddily to begin with.
In this case, it's a worthy trade off to stray away from it, as GF has shown that they can't balance outlines/cellshading with a cohesive art style, and without dropping performance like crazy.
