They should have just named Wugtrio into Paldean Dugtrio and Toudscruel into Paldean Tentacruel and called it a day.

Nah, it's better this way. Kantonian, Alolan and Galarian Meowth are all still cats, both Vulpix are foxes etc. But Diglett is a mole and Wiglett an eel. The Tentas are jellyfish/squid things and the Toeds are mushrooms.

A mushroom evolving to look like a jellyfish makes marginally more sense than a jellyfish evolving into an actual mushroom.

Yeah, I think the convergent evolution angle would have worked a lot better if the base forms looked like old pokemon while the evolutions deviated drastically from their counterparts to demonstrate that these are in fact unrelated creatures
but having both the base forms and their evolutions keep the same appearances and stats makes them no different from a standard regional that happens to have a dex slot.

Anon, read their website entries again. Its explicitly states that they were mistaken for the originals but found to be VARIANTS, not entirely new Pokemon. They clearly share enough behavior and/or genetic makeup with the originals to be considered a different branch of the same species.

Wiglett was a mistake, Toedscool is cool though
>One is a boring pure Water, the other uses a typing only unique to Torterra
