I'm....I'M GONNA AZAPOST
A lot of people, it seems, have the wrong idea of Azathoth and by extension the Other Gods and their Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep. They picture him as some sort of corporeal sphere or colossal squid monster at the centre of the “universe” (usually in some sort of mundane space with stars and even more mundane asteroids). They imagine him as completely non-sentient, like a microbe, a single-celled organism or a mere inanimate object). This is what the normies understanding of what Lovecraft’s Azathoth is supposed to be; usually gathering his intel from Youtube videos and never having actually read Lovecraft’s works. So allow me to clarify.
Azathoth and the Other Gods (not the “Outer Gods” – a term that was invented much later) are collectively described like this: “blind, voiceless, tenebrous and mindless”. It is my understanding from personal study that the way Lovecraft uses these adjectives is an incoherent grasp of the absolute irrational and ineffable. The word “mindless” here is often (incorrectly) perceived as a complete lack of sentience (e.g like a cell or inanimate object like I stated previously), but I beg to differ. These entities reside in a place beyond all structure – beyond time, beyond space, beyond even higher dimensions, in a place repeatedly referred to as “Ultimate Chaos”. This spiralling black void of infinite darkness is beyond any conceivable mathematical formulation and law of physics. The Ultimate Chaos, whos centre dwells the Daemon-Sultan Azathoth and surrounded by his flopping horde of mindless and amorphous dancers that caper insanely to daemonic flutes and drums, represent the absolute and ultimate destruction of reason. This is why they are referred to as “mindless” – all logical thought, rational decision and any human notion of reason is completely inapplicable or lacking.
