I wanna try and give online battling a go in SV, but I don't want to be a complete slave to meta. How doable is this? Is there any way to use favorites without being destroyed?

Thats not the problem. The biggest problem with comp is that everyone uses the same pokemon over and over and over and over again. You will see the same shitmon every game. Just play casual and with friends, ranked is just for sweaty losers

Most Pokemon have a viable niche and can be built around, the problem comes when people try to use 2-3 favorite Pokemon that don’t compliment each other and don’t bring counters for the meta Pokemon

I've got a pretty wide range of pokemon I like, out of them there's bound to be a couple gooduns, I hear Pheromosa is considered good, and I recently caught a shiny one (In a luxury ball too), so I would really love a chance to get to use it. I feel like I could go half favorites half meta, carefully going for those that compliment, but I don't think I'm smart enough to know what compliments. I hate the sword dog though. a lot.

When smogon SV comes out just play lower tiers. If you want to play ingame online though good fucking luck with legendary spam. Judging by how you're asking such a vague question you have zero competitive experience so your best bet without practicing on smogon or otherwise actually learning how to play will be to hope you get matched with little kids with four fire move Charizards. It's possible to find a niche for most pokemon but you'll need non-shitmons to do most of the work.
