basically they're a bunch of bullied kids that eventually threatened to stand up to their bullies and beat the shit out of them, but it worked too well and their bullies all dropped out even though they never did, so now they kinda just serve as a separate faction of outcast kids that don't go to school. they're kind of cringe, but it works in their favor imo since their whole thing is being bullied kids anyways

SV has Team Star. Team Galactic simply wanted a new universe to rule and profit from, while Cyrus only wanted a universe for himself and one without spirit.
Team Plasma, at least those who followed N, wanted to free pokemon from oppression. Ghetsis want to rule the world without any resistance.
Team Flare wanted to be spared from destruction, while Lysandre wanted to purge everyone else.

The Japanese dialogue in Sun and Moon is more direct:
- Guzma was gifted, but always blundered last second ending up 3rd place often.
- His father would beat him with golf clubs because of Guzma's "shortcomings".
- Hala being the Island's Kahuna was aware of Guzma being beaten to a pulp on the regular by his dad and refused to interfere because "it wasn't (his) place to do so".
- Guzma felt abandoned by society so he ran away from home.
- He founded Team Skull at some point which became a home for rejects like him (albeit Guzma is really fucking smart while most of Team Skull is a bunch of airheads).
- Lusamine praised him often since he did whatever he was told since Guzma was a people pleaser.
- Guzma latched onto this bit of positive reinforcement from someone older because the only adults in his life(his Father and Hala) just didn't seem to think he was good enough or worth the time.
The sad thing is that Guzma, despite being surrounded by people like Plumeria, Nanu and the rest of Team Skull, always sought a specific type of validation he never got.
Episode Rainbow Rocket, the only good part of USUM, pretty much makes his arc come full circle where he realizes that he was always YA BOI.

Nothing in either version of the game says this. This is fucking fanfic that people spread around because he has busted golf clubs in his room next to his second place trophies.
Guzma's parents are only shown as nice people and all his dad says this that they got into a fight where Guzma beat him up not the other way around.

Yeah the broken golf clubs being abuse weaponry is fanfic based on a webcomic someone made. They're broken because Guzma obviously has a short temper, so when he would choke it against his maybe sister? Kahili at golf, he'd Billy Madison the shit out of them in a fit of rage. HE busted them up, not his dad. I think he's just frustrated with himself and he has low self esteem, pottery given Wimpod and Golisopod are his signature Pokemon, Wimpy as a child, intimidating as an adult, but on the inside, functionally the same (Wimp Out and Emergency Exit, same thing different coat of paint.) So him finding solace in being praised by Lusamine he probably clung to it and tried his best to make her happy given he feels he couldnt do the same for his folks (always coming second or third) not realizing his folks don't care and love him anyway.

The criticisms against SM are pretty valid, cutscenes you can't skip are annoying and it's a corridor. All that sucks during replays but I think it has one of the best first runs of any pokemon game. For most games that would be enough but in pokemon replaying is huge and it does get a bit annoying.

Yeah, I'm pretty asshurt over how lazy USUM were as expansions, but it was a really great first run. The level curve was a legitimately fun challenge IF you turn off exp share (probably a few other self imposed restrictions).

I didn’t get USUM cause it didn’t look different enough, but I disagree on the replay value of SM. The flaws in SM are real, but it’s the story and characters that makes up for it in my opinion. It helps on replay that I actually enjoy the characters in the game, and that they have personalities and relationships that feel consequential. Add to that a good soundtrack and a solid spread of Pokémon designs (both new and alolan) and you have a game that while not back to back replayable, offers a good replay when the mood strikes.
