Its fundamentally a human problem. Most people react more strongly to things that even superficially remind them of humans. It's why Digimon for example got overrun by so many of the humanoid Digimon being shilled all the time and being made almost always very powerful.

Unironically the reason the Gen 5 starters didn't sell much merch is because none of them were shilled. Ash never fully evolved any of them in the anime, the final forms weren't featured very prominently in the marketing, and no one of them received extra special treatment over the others. It's got nothing to do with the designs themselves, it's just that, for some reason, they were marketed less than other starters before and since

Pocket Monsters, where the original inspiration was clearly taking familiar animals, common objects, folklore subjects, etc. and making them into more fantastic creatures (often monstrous, in fact).

One of the biggest strengths of earlier generations designs is that they’re often ambiguous enough in terms of the nature/disposition of many of the creatures, to where two people can feasibly see any one Pokémon in head-canon as cute, fierce, stern, etc etc etc as almost a canvas for the player to envision what personality they think theirs would have.

How tf do the smooth plastic-y rigid personality fursuit characters we tend to get for starters anymore fit that.

Funnily enough this is the first gen since IV where I won’t be boxing my starter. I’m really digging the croc. The only thing I’d change about him is probably the flame placement. Don’t think he needed them to begin with.

idk I’d say the fact that they seemingly deliberately didn’t make Gengar actually very creepy counts, because it’s seems to walk a fine line between creepy ghost but also kinda small, unthreatening, especially if it’s your own, you can definitely find a lot of art that steers Gengar both creepy or malicious, some that’s like prankster almost like a poltergeist, and plenty that just makes it cute if that’s any barometer.

I think you’re most right on Machamp, because I could at least see people taking Alakazam as either wise, powerful/intimidating, sagelike, or chill and like happy and meditative.

Like it definitely varies from design to design but I think the original 151 are still as popular as they are in part because at the least many if not most can be pictured with a variety of personalities a player sees theirs as having.
