Yeah, that makes sense. It's also probably why GF chose really weird optimizations like lowering distant NPC framerates instead of just giving them proper LODs. They were made higher quality first, and then scaled down to run on Switch.

The graphics modding community is going to fucking insane on PC. Modders already fixed shit like PLAs horrible textures on tree pop-in. Imagine what they can do to polish up SV. increased draw distances, reduced Pokemon spawn pop-in, removing the dumb distant NPC framerate limits, 60 fps.etc

I definitely think SV has a lot of potential just being able to run as well as they do currently on PC with emulators. Modders were able to do amazing shit with BotW on PC via CEMU.

Whatever graphics artist they hired to make the trees for PLA and SV need to be fucking fired ASAP. If they just had better trees that alone would greatly improve the overall presentation. But instead they made the same mistake 2 games in a row.

The games run at a max of 30fps. On emulators with the right setup its basically locked to that, but supposedly some people on OG hardware are reporting issues.

Also, it should be noted that distant NPCs animations run at like 10fps. That's not a performance issue, its just a really fucking weird optimization method GF used instead of making proper distance LoDs

Are they compromising it for denuvo or some crap (or rather planning for it, but then realizing there's not enough power on the switch for it regardless to do so - ending up with this last minute weird hack of a release that may be patched later to help it look better and run better)?

Or maybe they're really stretching it thin with the time between major releases so they can sell as much shit while pokemon is still hot.
They're probably anticipating a decline soon and want to be ahead of it.

I think the problem is the game seems to lack distance fog and so bad LoDs and grass draw distance are way too apparent. If they just dialed in the distance fog and sorted out texture tiling issues I think that would make a big difference in the overall presentation.
also the trees in SV just do not look good regardless.

The lighting is all fucking wrong and it shouldn't even be that resource heavy to improve. It's the way you highlight things in the distance, etc, with color and lighting. ER is probably the best example of how to draw people's attention to distant landmarks with color and lighting.
You can abstract them to the simple cartoony world of pokemon with ease, I've seen indie games that do better than this.

The minimap doesn't show you what Pokemon are around in real time, it just shows you what Pokemon can be found in that general area and it changes based on time of day/weather as well IIRC.

See how each column and object "pops" to you with the way light bounces off it?

The objects are dull as fuck. Nothing is "popping" to me and it's dull and lifeless as a result.
This isn't simply because it's shaded in simple colors, the ambient lighting and the techniques (placement of light objects to make it bounce "right") modern games use to "hide" the plainness of plain colored objects are simply non existent here.
It looks like a DS game in HD with nothing done to make it not appear like a DS game for a non DS console. It just looks like shit. Utter garbage.

Yeah, I kinda get the same impression. The character models look so different and higher quality than the other NPCs it looks almost uncanny. And it feels like each individual town/city had different artists working for each too because the quality of those range from looking okay to looking awful. The Pokemon models themselves look fantastic though.

Lighting is generally similar in games with highly detailed polygons or simpler polygons.

It's nothing to do with the graphics or the engine or the machinery. The problem is how they are used.
And how they are used in this game is like how a Game Boy dev would develop it.

Why can't they make a pokemon game look like BotW or Elden Ring?
Because the pokemon company doesn't care about pokemon, it cares about money now.

It's like it's become like the TV/movie industry became around the 60s/70s.

And again, still not a fair comparison, since Elden Ring is utilizing global illumination, something well beyond what the Switch is capable of. You want to compare it to other games that use dynamic lighting, then use something like BotW or Monster Hunter.

I hate this garbage "they do this industry for the money" mentality. People wouldn't bother making products at all if it was just for the money. They'd just focus on making money.

It's like they have no backend programming specialists and it's nothing but designers who half ass it to produce 20% of their actual vision.
That's what frustrates me with Gamefreak. They clearly have ideas, but don't have the ability to bring them to life in 3D because they started with 2D.

Maybe their company is too small? It's just such a strange thing with Gamefreak. They seem stretched thin.

No they clearly have better designs in some areas.
Bethesda has none anywhere. Obsidian showed us that and they had far less time, money and people to do it.
