As >>52180421 kinda said, Serena is a much newer character so her original design wasn't THAT far off from the nuanime redesign.

What's actually hilarious is that they forgot to redesign Tracey, so when he made an appearance like a month ago he had his old design, then they quickly redesigned him the week after.

and the second one is pic related, which I remember people shitting furiously on when it was first revealed.

The current one is probably the best of the three redesigns desu.

Have you ever seen sun and moons animation? That shit was fucking clean. A vast array of movements and use of smears I've ever seen in a pokemon anime.
Now the style, on the other hand, is a bit softer and rounder Believe me I didn't like the way the sun and moon looked at first but I understand why they went this route. It's easier to animate with.

lol most of left is from movies/OVAs which had higher budget compared to the TV episodes in the right.
Color palettes have changed but there's quality and "QUALITY" from both eras.

The new style is unironically better. The old style eyes are too skinny and janky. In the new style facial features are actually parallel and look cleanly done. Plus the shading is better.

OG Cardcaptor Sakura was a pretty above-average looking TV show.
It looked good but the pacing was also veeery slow to compensate for the good looking shots and 30 seconds sakuga from each episode.
Clear Card Hen can't catch up but it's not a instrisic problem to modern anime bur rather just isolated circumstances, talent exists, they just weren't there for the sequel.

They always looked if you compared to characters from their own seasons, the difference is that left spans a character from each decade while right is more concentrated in a small timeframe of years (hell, two of them are from the same episode, that's why the background is the same too).

More people started designing characters other than him and his old style can't take prominence over characters designed by Ohmura, take, Unno and Mizutani's work.
