They completely missed the fact that Delphox looks like something off Deviantart and Chesnaught looks like a fucking digimon.
Rillaboom also got away with it because hes a fucking gorilla and you really can't fuck that up. Combined with the fact chimps use tools, his "drumset" actually worked in his design. Skeledirge also came out really well made which surprises me considering they decided to repeat the anthro fuck up on the other two.
In terms of overall job designs they fuck up as well because I had to point out the thief/knight/magician thing to all my friends in XY and had to point out the James Bond Intleon thing too. Going into this, its often hard to copy something like that without being on the nose about it. MTG had the same problem with a card based after the Trojan Horse. They made a card that summoned itself to your opponents field and gave you tokens each turn. No one understood the reference because they made it a Lion instead of a Horse. Once they changed it to a horse, everyone understood the reference. This is probably why they had to force Cinderace to wear pants and gave Meowscarada a full on harlequinn mask.
TL;DR: They thought they could redo Greninja, didn't realize how hard it would be, and fucked up by trying to be more on the nose about it but that doesn't work in pokemon designs.
