Considering I was born in the 90s and it was the anime that I liked moreso than the games, and my favorite game isn't the first game I played, it really doesn't matter a whole lot. I went with the newest game at the time (Sapphire) and it was nice.

Don't push shit on your kid for fuck's sake, if the kid is old enough to play (the minimum for E games is 7 btw, and any younger you're a shit parent hooking the vidya addiction far too young :/ even I didn't play until I was 9), they are old enough to tell you what media they might be interested in. Your job as a parent is mainly to keep their interests age-appropriate and express the morals you wish to teach them, but otherwise allow them freedom within your guidance.
Your kid may not be interested in Pokémon and that's fine, let them enjoy what's popular for their age group.
