people rarely want to review their current feelings or dredge up an overview of their average ass day like some shitty interview
if someone starts a convo like this but is still closed off to talking about themselves, it means they're feeling like shit about something they aren't ready to talk about. but they still want the comfort of contact.
so just start talking about whatever the fuck you want, you interests and concerns, instead of prying into them. let them open up if they feel comfortable. give them some room to say something whenever they're ready
or just let them know you're there and say you're going to do something else. they'll get the message they can talk to you if they want but they still gotta talk
but bottom line is, "how was your day" is about as snoozeworthy as saying "fine". talk about YOUR day or something
