auto battle is the kind of thing people accept in the short term because it's convenient but long term devalues absolutely everything about the game... then people only realize it was a huge mistake 10 years later.

this. its not engaging, it has no depth to it, it's not satisfying or fun to use, its awkward and its clunky, but hey, it gets you those TM resources quick. Team star raids with this mechanic were the most lackluster part of the entire game

Mixed feelings.
It makes regular battles feel like even more of a chore than before...
but then, there's fewer times you NEED to do regular battles - reserved for trainers and catching pokemon, which is still fun.

problem is that it detracts from any real change between games.
How can you really update auto-battle from here for a new generation?
Unless you move the focus specifically onto autobattling and create AoEs and special attacks and so on... at which point why do we have normal turn based battles?

It's okay, but it runs the risk of undermining the entire franchise's core gameplay loop.

It's not autobattle.
It awards 1/10 experience or less and doesn't allow catching.
It's a gimmick to accompany this game's version of outbreaks from LA, and for some reason they added TMs to that.

Extremely bad optics, not that bad in game, all just to bring in LA-style shiny hunting.
not worth it imo

Battling random encounters is such an outdated filler concept, people who like battling don't care for just smacking a wild shitmon with a super effective move for an hour, they want to battle actual trainers, so there's nothing wrong with getting rid of random Pokémon battles; but not replacing it with something people clearly like, catching Pokémon by throwing a ball (if the popularity of Pokémon Go and Let's Go is anything to go by), is stupid as fuck. Basically it should just be P:LA's design (I think, I haven't played it)
