How long until we get convergent Pokemon with unique evolutions that don't look like the original? Seems like the next step, like regional evolutions did before.

Never. "Covergent evolutions" are a way for Game Freak to get away with filling the dex with recolors, something you all shit on when other games do, but will happily accept now because it's Pokemon and they pulled a buzzword out of their ass to justify it.

I hate what little bitches /vp/ are about regionals. They’ve been a great way to refresh under appreciated pokemon without further bloating the Dex with new Pokémon you’re all going to say look like shit anyway. Stuff like Alolan Muk, Galar Meowth/Purrserker, Galar Slowbro and King and Toedscruel have been some of the best designs and concepts of their generations. These games have a lot wrong with them but regional variants have largely been a fun spin on things.

Yes but /vp/ has always had a terrible problem differentiating between ‘One I dislike’ and ‘Objectively bad design that does not belong in this franchise.’ Like everyone bitching about divergent evolutions, regionals, whatever you want to call them. The most you’ll see is that it’s lazy which…is a non starter criticism? What’s lazy about it? If the entire point of the idea is to reconceptualize classic designs it’s not lazy to do just that. You can say giving Alolan Persian a fat head and a new paint job feels uninspired but calling the entire concept lazy because it’s not to your personal taste is just childish. You can call anything that isn’t to your personal level of satisfaction lazy. It doesn’t mean anything. But really it’s a larger problem the series has dealt with since around Gen IV when it started becoming NOT MY POKÉMON and everyone grew up to believe they are the true arbiter of what makes a Pokémon good.

Frankly it’s a bit disappointing they didn’t at least do one or two more. Then again we also only got 2 regional lines this Gen.

My guess is they’re going to be doing a split of both Regionals and Convergents for new regions going forward.

(The difference between mimicry and convergent evolution, is convergence happens due to independently developing similar solutions/features to similar environments and niches, whereas mimicry is an adaptation to deliberately cause another organism to misidentify as another one.)

The only pre-existing examples I can really think of off the top of my head is Mimyku. I’d count Caterpie if there was an actual snake mon that it resembled.

The panda’s false-thumb is another particularly amusing example:

Because evolution just goes with whatever it finds first that works, rather than having an actual plan.

A really cool one I only just learned about from seeing someone’s fakemon of it is the Venus Flytrap Anemone.
It’s also one of the only good examples I know of which crosses between aquatic and land (which both of Pokémon’s ones did.)
