I hope that this is where the series heads in the future, yeah. I have had more fun fucking around and exploring this over world than doing ANY of the story content. I hope that they take this lump of clay and refine it in further games.

It is PAINFULLY obvious that this game just ran out of time. All of the non-important NPCs use the same animations, male or female, which leads to everyone looking like a tranny. The glitching of the camera and the world at large is just PAINFULLY obvious. Level scaling needs to exist. It needs to. It's insane it doesn't exist to begin with. And, on top of that, the game.is glitchy as hell. It's just not finished.

All that bad stuff said, they finally did SOMETHING different. They finally made a game where moving around the map isn't just a means to get to the next story point. I have always wanted the exploratory part of Pokemon to take priority, and goddamnit, warts and all, here it is and I like it.

Blame game freak. They put in less and less effort each generation and it shows. They are min maxing pokemon profits by cutting corners anywhere they can. They are focused on the zoomer market, which is easy games with fast pace stories and they know the millennials will still buy out of nostalgia.

In reality it just hurts the longevity of their games, but who cares abput longevity when they are doing yearly dumps of new gens.

The games are absolutely soulless and are nothing more than cash grabs at this point. We know they can be better. They know they can be better, but they don't care. So why should we.

By gen 12 the game will have an auto walker feature, auto battler, and auto catcher. People will still buy it because "new pokemon"

Not really, I just traversed wherever I wanted and continued the story from where I felt like, if I got to some boss that was too strong then I'd try something else and so on, I didn't go in any specific order and it just so happened that doing that made me underleveled, which I liked for a change.

If the game is hard if you ignore content then it's not hard. The easy content still exists. If I ignore easy trainers and gyms now, they'll just be easier when I do them later. The only possible way this ‘friend’ would already be five levels ahead of the first Titan, Star Mission and Second Gym doing nothing but the first gym and some trainers is if they’re only using their starter and even then it’s just not feasible he’s in the 20s after a single gym without grinding

I completely agree. The game is embarrassing in some respects, but I absolutely love just fucking off in one direction and catching everything new I can find. A few more years of development and this could’ve been a masterpiece.
But people griping about S/V for being buggy when Sw/Sh was just a soulless walk from one corridor to the next boggles my mind. S/V is at least ambitious in some respects, and I, too, hope they keep making open worlds, just with some fine tuning.

I’ll never understand why Pokefans grew up to define their experience with the games through difficulty. Maybe it’s just that they got their asshole reamed in Gen I because they didn’t fully understand what they were doing yet or something completely different but…it’s a JRPG. It’s a genre that’s fundamentally divorced from difficulty and skill. You don’t practice to get better reaction time and situational awareness like other genres. You just make your stats better than the enemy stats and mash through it. Pokémon definitely COULD be more difficult, don’t get me wrong but that difficulty would still ultimately require player participation in that you’d have to actively avoid healing, switching out, overleveling, using high BST Pokémon, type advantage, etc. You could easily do all these things and limit yourself to the same number of Pokémon as the trainers and gym leaders you fight but you don’t. You roll up with a team of 6, switch out for time advantage or when you know the next attack would KO your Pokémon because you’re an adult and you are smarter than the AI.

All of this isn’t to defend Pokémon but rather to say, Pokémon is a trying to sell a chill monster raising sim, not a difficult JRPG. It’s largely up to the player to decide what they want their adventure to look like.

An impediment on you progressing in your journey. At no point so JRPG encounters become more difficult, they become longer. And your ‘strategy’ just becomes those games equivalent of what I mentioned earlier in using items/healing spells and advantages when you know the next attack would KO a party member. I love JRPGs. But they’re adventure stories. Not challenges.

I don't define games by their difficulty because most games don't have this problem. Pokemon is the only AAA series I can think of that is too easy for no good reason. You don't hear people saying Digimon is too easy. Cyber Sleuth even had difficulty options.

I mean this is why I’ve said for a whole that Pokémon needs to move away from focusing on battles as the core gameplay experience Legends and ScaVi actually are starting to do this. The problem is major studios also hate optional content. It’s a waste of resources at that level if your players won’t engage with parts of your game. So they’re unlikely to have a Pokémon game where you CAN fight difficult challenges if you want but don’t have to. There’s still so many archaic holdovers in the battle system of Pokémon though it’s one of the clearest examples of institutional rot and lack of innovation. Can only hope that Legends keeps doing well and making popular changes to the formula.

I think /vp/ forgets how children play this game. I was in elementary school for the first three gens and my MO was to make my favorites strong enough to skullfuck everything I came across. The only things that checked me is that I’d have zero type coverage in my move sets and didn’t use items so if there were a good chunk of trainers between Pokémon centers I’d be limping into the next town. I’m not even going to bother to check but I’d put money on you being able to look up any video of a kid playing the last three gens and they’re leading every encounter with an over leveled starter.

Yeah that’s exactly what I mean. D/P came out in 8th grade for me and I played and remember them the least but I do distinctly remember that that was the first time I started putting thought into team comp and coverage. The first time I wasn’t taking multiple legendaries and my starter into the Elite 4. Hell I remember in Ruby I used to use the first two members of the Elite 4 to grind levels knowing I’d eventually lose until I was eventually a high enough level to sweep. You just get to an age where you see behind the curtain and have to decide whether you’re going to break the game or not.

Yes you can do gyms and star battles while under leveled, but when you do the ones you didn't do you'll be even more over leveled than you would've been before nullifying the joy from being challenged.
