It was, pardon the expression, black and white as to the story beats, with Masuda even saying "the fans expected Gray but with the story we'd told, it wouldn't have worked". That he also said Nintendo surprised him when they asked for a final DS game even pointed to them not considering telling more story, until Nintendo put them on the spot to pull a game out their hole they couldn't easily rehash. Solution: Write the story set after the events of 1, rehash the region and team and call it a sequel.
