It's the same as that dumb "Iris is now champion for some reason" nonsense - past series had characters return in more or less the same state we had them in when we last saw them - Misty returns twice and is "currently a gym leader", May and Dawn return and are "doing contests", Brock returns twice and is "studying to be a doctor"... it's all what we saw them leave to do the last time we saw them. Their quest continues the same way Ash's quest continues.

But the current series is obsessed with progress and change for the sake of getting Twitter upboats, so now Ash is becoming world champion and everyone else are making tons off progress offscreen so viewers can clap and tweet about it. It's dumb.

In B2W2, which didn't exist at the time the anime character was created. Her story in the BW anime ended with her being offered the position of gym leader (which is what she was in the original BW games) and her declining because she wanted to travel more first.
Then she magically became champion offscreen just because after some autistic director decided everything needs to match the video games for no apparent reason. It's a miracle he didn't make Gary the Kanto champion too.

In the games he beat the entire elite four in one go, he's clearly way the fuck stronger than Lance there. If you're going by game autism it makes MORE sense than making Iris a champion.

In Iris’ defense we haven’t seen in her 2 generations. So a lot could have happened between the end of BW to JNs. It’s been discussed that she always had the potential to be strong as she won that mini tournament and after her training with Clair she set out on her Journey. Do I wish we saw it? Fuck yeah but the show always did paint her as one of the strongest travel companions if she can give Ash a run for his money.

Ash became "champion" by winning some random tournament in a podunk region where Pokemon battles were barely a thing because they made the previously nonexistent champion title a prize, Iris became champion of a region with an established champion that was portrayed as way the fuck about her level. It'd be like if Misty returned the next episode and revealed that she had beaten Cynthia offscreen, it's just handing out ridiculous and illogical accomplishments for no reason.

People generally aren't all that fond of characters getting massive powerups, accomplishments and development offscreen, and especially not when said "development" doesn't even fit with what they had set up with the character before they sent her offscreen.

We’ve been following Ash’s journey and we know how important it is to win a league. He’s failed at it multiple times and until he finally got it. So seeing somebody like Iris do it off screen on her first attempt no less..makes Ash’s triumph feel meaningless in comparison and is baffling why they waited this long to pull the trigger?

Were you expecting her to become a main character again? Everything that happens with be off screen because she’s no longer a main character idiot. They did set her character up to do anything contradictory to what she’s doing now. In fact she was challenging Gym’s during the main series like Drayden and Clair.

The only way to become a Champion is defeating the Gym Leaders and making you way towards the Champion by winning a league.

The only way to reach the Master Rank in Contests Lives is to participate in Normal, Super and Hyper first.

That's not caring about development, its not using common sense.
