Never.

I started with Red when I was 18 and Im 42 now.
I skipped the remakes though, except BDSP remake because back on the day I skipped that gen so I played the remake recently instead.

I consider myself just a casual fan though, since I never ever got close to competitive. Im uncapable of remember most pokemon names, skills, types, etc, I just play main titles and sometimes an spinoff like Arceus casually.
I play the game, enjoy the game, beat it, play the postgame a bit then put the game on the self without even completing the pokedex.

ITs been like this for 24 years. And I have the intention of keeping doing the same

After USUM. A year later a friend suggested to try out the SMT series since it was a monster collector and they knew I liked Pokemon, the only thing I knew about the series at the time was Persona 5 (megaten rather than smt but you get my point) but I didn't own a Playstation so I looked into what other games there were and I came across SMT IV as a result. Suffice to say, I fell in love and ever since I been playing every title from the series when I come across it. I played the entirety of the mainline series, P4G and currently playing P5R and most importantly I played Strange Journey which became my favorite JRPG and if it wasn't for USUM I probably wouldn't never checked out the series because at the time I assumed Pokemon was the only monster collector worth paying attention to so the thought of trying new things out never crossed my mind.

It's funny because Pokemon black/white and Pokemon black/white 2 were very enjoyable games for me and I honestly enjoyed them more than 4th gen
I have no idea what the other mainline games are like, I've only recently gotten back into thinking about pokemon

this. got Moon, then quit. I didn’t even finish the game fully, didn’t get Necrozma at all or 100% the dex. color me surprised when I learned they were drawing USUM trailers and I’ve been missing them, but I still didn’t get them.
After that, I did get Brilliant Diamond, but that was it. No LGPE, no SwSh, not even Arceus (planned on it). Then I get gifted Scarlet, so I’m back on /vp/ again.
Honestly, definitely interested in taking long breaks. Because I’m new to every Mon and mechanic introduced in SwSh and SV (I didn’t even know it had released) so much stuff is new. Still don’t know how good works, but atm it doesn’t matter to me.

After UM.
I gave Gamefreak the benefit of the doubt for gen 6, excusing it for being the first games in full 3D on a new console so I wound up getting moon which wound up being even worse. I was gonna quit right there but knew the sequel/third version usually fixes or expands on the main titles so wound up getting UM which was much, much worse.
After that I was pretty much done. Didn’t want to have my hand held and gamefreak’s response was to princess carry the player instead with the Let’s go games.

I saw the writing on the wall and knew that all that mattered for Gamefreak was to pander to nostalgia. Actual quality means nothing. Gen 8 were clear scams and it was evident that they were just going to see how much laziness they could get away with and how incomplete they can make a game to force you to pay for DLC. I honestly should’ve just ended in gen 6 after Masuda made his statement about trying to cater to the casual audience. Casals aren’t fans of the game, they are fans of the fandom. The fact that X/Y are the first games where you actually have to cheat to catch them all should’ve been the big red flag.

This generation, funnily enough. I already felt I was "growing out" of Pokemon since Gen 6, but I think Gen 8 really hit me the hardest with it. I did buy PLA, which was fun but overall pretty mediocre, and Scarlet. Gen 9 did seem interesting, but after being disappointing with Gen 8 and PLA, my expectations were already low. Boy, was I in for a surprise.

Stopped after Sun, but I picked up a used copy of Shining Pearl earlier this year and didn't like it. I'm emulating Violet right now and not really feeling it. Idk, I just got out of the school so maybe it'll be more enjoyable once I can actually do things
