My first thought when playing through this area is that what would be a fairly common setpiece in any other JRPG is being saved as the absolute climax of the game for a pokemon game. One of the few times that Pokemon feels like it has actual characters that inhabit a world and interact with things other than just the player character battling them and it's basically post-game content.

Though they fuck it up because it's GameFreak, so shit breaks whenever one of the NPCs is talking. You can't really interact with the world in the one or two ways you normally can when someone is talking, so maybe it's a boon that they didn't try to do more of these moments because they're incompetent as fuck and have no idea how to program.

the game turns linear after you get all the badges, since the 3 "final" missions have NPCs with basically the same levels, so it doesn't matter the order you beat them. and area zero has place off the main path where you can encounter paradox mons in low quantities

AZ isn't good because it's more linear, it's good because it presents a """challenge""" you can't just solve by checking the fucking minimap. And disabling XRaidon means you're more deliberate in exploration since you can't just zoom around at mach 1 while climbing the walls

I just got to Area Zero and they did a really good job at making it feel special with the layout, the plot and the music. Haven't gotten far enough to see the paradox mons yet.
Had the frames in this game been consistent I would wager that this may have been one of the best moments/locations in the entire series, up there with arriving to the non 1-3 Sevii Islands, the Hall of Origin, the Emerald Battle Frontier, and the Ultra Ruin.
