In retrospect, how do you feel about the "Semi 3D" artstyle of the DS games? I think it looks worse than just using sprites

Gen 4 is the best Pokemon has ever looked. The overworld was nice and had decent variety and the in battle animations weren't ruined yet.

It was an interesting concept that really gave DS era its own identity. Tho in contrary of most people I feel like Gen V did it better on technical level, tho I would prefer if it retained bright colors of Gen IV.

100% 2d with scaling graphics looks better than "2.5d". However, no one does it. Fell off hard after 3d graphics became "the standard" and I can't even think of a game doing it after Diablo 2.
2.5d is a fine compromise if the textures are well done.

Why not? The models for the trainers and pokemon are very high quality, and as far as graphics go, they're the closest to other games on the 3DS.

No, they aren't. Maybe relative to other pokemon games.

It barely competes with games like Dragon Quest 9, which released a decade prior on the previous console. And no one cares about the graphical quality if they have a good style, which XY/SM also don't have.

I clips have grabbed a way worse screenshot of SM but I garbed the best one I could find that shows off pokemom, trainers, and the world. You grabbed the worst one you could find from a prerelease version. Do you think you're worth talking to any more?

The 3D in the DS games was just enough to give the world depth without removing the classic pokemon look they always had, it was the ultimate artstyle

The Overworld is amazing and all, but this will play in the god awful gen 4 battle engine. Still cool, could've been better. To their defense, there were better tools for gen 4 only when they started. Even more recently Following Platinum was released and I think they back ported to it, instead of keep working on HGSS base.

I replayed BW recently and was honestly struck by how ugly it is. Some of the environments are nice in static shots, but as soon as the camera starts moving it all turns to shit. Character sprites are also completely fucked, and don't get me started on the shit-smeared battle backgrounds and awful tweening, pixelated back sprites. Gen 4 is absolutely crisp and clean, I don't know how they fucked it up so much.

Not the guy you asked, but LGPE was pretty solid in its visuals. LGPE might actually be the most competently made pokemon game on the switch today. It would have been perfect if it weren't for the GO mechanics and the fact that its a remake of a remake.
