How is one expected to actually catch one of every pokemon now? Yes, you can trade for version exclusives. It's reasonable to trade a bagon for a larvitar for instance. But I legitimately have no clue how you're supposed to get the legendaries outside of playing the game twice and trading your extra box legendary, which seems unreasonable. What else would be good enough trade bait other than the box legendary? Of course you could trade back and forth between someone else's game but you haven't caught them all have you? You just had it for a second.

Third versions helped with this since you could catch all the unique ones but they don't do those anymore. I've just always felt it's so contradictory to the ultimate goal of completing the pokedex
