You could easily turn it into a gameplay mechanic to reinforce the professor's ambitions/goals. Give him a certain amount of materials, and he gives unique medicines. Maybe even as OP as creating something like Sacred Ash.
It's a cool idea having Professors be more than just the first main NPC you talk to. Like, they continue to have relevance.
