I'm not even sure if Larry is actually miserable or if he just looks like that. He seems to insist he's pretty content with being a "normal guy" and he gets to basically work at a place he loves to eat, and he eats as much as he wants since he probably gets discounts and/or eats for free because it brings in so much business and he probably knows the chef behind the counter. Otherwise the only problem he seems to have is that he's sometimes bullied by Geeta to do extra work by double timing as an Elite 4 Flying-type user, but she even told him not to do overtime anymore after you become Champion. I didn't get the impression he was depressed, I think he's just basically just Eeyore as a Japanese businessman.

It's either you're so overworked that you can't enjoy the extra money you get, or you get the double-whammy of being overworked and unpaid for what you do
Also if Larry was supposed to be a traditional salaryman, they would've made him a bit more obsequious and energetic about his job
Instead, we hear him complain about his boss and worry that his pay will get cut because he's spending company time talking to a 10 year-old

Yet we're free to talk with the rest of the gym leaders who are not worried at all about things like that
Sure, maybe Larry really is supposed to be a salaryman. Though it's kinda sad that other gym trainers get to do things he can't
