Cynthia was easy to beat with Croconaw and Drowzee as a kid, and Cynthia was a breeze with Honchkrow and Chimecho

Whitney was an early gym where most kids likely only had a starter and some HM slaves, most mons being male made attract more likely to proc, and if rollout gained momentum it could sweep a team(and if you chose cyndaquilqnd only focused on it, it was pretty much the charmander/brock gym all over again), it's not that hard to understand why some kids had a hard time.

Cynthia is overhyped for pretty being the first champion that wasnt mostly mono, so kids had to think because they couldnt spam ice beam/rocks/earthquake.
