You don't make advances in the scientific fields by having a sense of morals or by being a family person - in fact, most scientists are married to their jobs, so to speak, and their home lives tend to suffer and fall apart as a result. When you become that dedicated to a single thing, what's right and wrong no longer matter - all that matters is pursuing your goal to the end, regardless of who suffers around you for it. The number of cruel, inhumane things done in the name of science over the centuries that you never hear about (and the few you actually DO hear about) is staggering, but understandable.
Also, as a side not - just because you're respected by your peers, doesn't mean you're a good person, especially when away from prying eyes.
