If you were looking for games to play, which would you choose?
Format A: Having 100,000-200,000 players, played by most YouTubers, but has like 4 rules you disagree with
or
Format B: Having 12 players, only seen at the bottom of the server list with 0 advertisements by E-celebs, but was the format with everything you want.
The vast majority of people will pick A because every match you’ll fight someone new and you’ll actually know said format exists. And because of that, Format A gets richer with newer players and more YouTubers talking about it, while Format B loses more players because they’re fighting the same people every day with maybe a small trickle of new people showing up.
So “just make your own platform” still doesn’t work here. Only way to really change Smogon is if a rich billionaire decides to buy the website for some reason.
