Lance goes from being "Champion of the Elite Four" in the Johto arc of OS to "member of the Kanto Elite Four" in early Journeys to "Champion of Kanto and Johto" in late Journeys.
Alder is the champion of Unova in all of BW, then Iris takes over offscreen in Journeys.
If they were that autistic about staying true to the game, they could've just made Gary the champion of Kanto offscreen and had him randomly say "Hi Ash, I'm champion of Kanto now. Anyway..." as their only explanation. Logic and actual explanations doesn't matter much to them.
