The insistence of the Protag character being a blank self insert with no personality or backstory besides “kid who just immigrated to the region and is about to start their Pokémon journey” is seriously holding Pokémon plots back. Pokémon plots as they are now are doomed to either just be about a ten year old stumbling across a domesticated terrorist plot and having to stop them, like in 90 percent of mainline Pokémon games, or a ten year old being a bystander to an actually fully realized character’s story arc, and the protag’s only involvement is to be a vehicle in their development and lend them a hand in Pokémon battles like in SM and SV.

It works fine for Dragon Quest. That having been said, the silent protagonists either solve several problems over the course of the story, usually one a town in addition to the overarching plot, or have some sort of backstory that is mildly important despite them not really verbalizing.

Let's be real, Arven would've been the main character were he more talented at battling. He has the real connection to the main plot and fits all of the classic JRPG protagonist clichés like having a missing dad who leaves important plot items that become crucial to saving the day.

A silent protagonist is alright when you have characters with decent chemistry. I thought Penny and Nemona were bland and obnoxious respectively but seeing them and Arven all bounce off of each other in last act of the game made them grow on me. I kinda wish there was a Pokemon game where your rivals/friends actually stuck around instead of checking in on you every few gyms.

A Pokémon Colosseum type deal where all battles are double battles, but with it’s because you have a partner alongside you would be cool. Although instead of the partner being AI, it would probably be better if the player can control the other character too.
