I actually kinda like that he had a themed team that wasn't just mono-type. It was easy, sure, but I wish we had more of this general idea in the games.

ORAS at least somewhat fixed it by increasing their levels and evolving them. She still ended up with 5 mons by the end of the game (post e4 match)
