Pokemon is a billion trillion million $$$ dollar franchise that people all over the world have been latched onto for nearly 30 years now. You could make a game with objectively better exploration, more content and just as cute and cool designs, and only a fraction of the people would play it.

Yokai Watch killed itself, it almost got everything right with 2 and 3 and then the whole franchise floundered between 30 different things, shat itself and died in a pool of diarrhea and vomit. Pokemon didn't kill YW, it killed itself. Also as much as I like the games the monster designs were definitely not as good as Pokemon. What I would give for Level 5 to make a Pokemon game.

You think that's bad, their follow-up series (Snack World) failed because the toy line got delayed and had to release a few months later. The only problem is that the ONLY way to get more than the basic weapons in the game was to scan the toys, meaning that people were stuck trying to beat the game with starter gear for months.

I wanted to be excited for DokeV but it's been in Development Hell practically since it was announced and to my knowledge, there isn't a single solid REAL gameplay trailer involving any of the monsters or combat system yet, even 3+ years post-initial-reveal. Just a practical tech demo showcasing the open world and all the different methods of travel you can use, and a cringe kpop dance choreography video for elementary school kids featuring the human children characters. It's a monster raising game but we still don't even know the mascot monster's name or what it looks like after multiple years. It's already dead in the water imho.

The problem with that is that if you focus on "older audiences", most companies suck the whimsical and cute aspects out immediately. It's like how D&D got rid of all of their goofier (and more interesting) monsters back in 3rd Edition and turned all the monsters into some form of snarling canine-dinosaur so they could be taken more seriously.

there is effort put into world design, monster designs are likeable (might be subjective), and everything shown in the first 2 trailers so far looks pretty fun and exciting
it's like pokemon x gta, but without guns/violence and instead befriending these yokai like creatures
i hope the developers realize what they're sitting on here
it could genuinely be a really great game and a strong competitor to pokemon if they pull this off right

Monster Rancher rereleased the first two games with a massive database to replace the "read a CD" aspect of those games, then they released a cross-over game with the Ultraman series that lets you raise and train giant Kaiju.

With SMT, they rereleased SMTIII, released a mobage with a heavy focus on just the demons, made SMTV a big release on the Switch and revived their Soul Hackers series to make a big release on the other consoles.

It's not like how it was even a decade ago, when Pokemon really was the only Monster Battling series made by a legitimate company. People have actual choices now.

Mihoyo/Hoyoverse might be an answer. It keeps the anime style too. They didn't announce shit though, they just had the pokemon-like event in genshin.
