I thought it was hilarious that the idea of Serena being a serious trainer was so ridiculous to them that they just invented an anime-exclusive Pokemon Contest knock off for her to do. At first it seemed like she might end up doing the gym challenges alongside Ash, which would have actually been pretty novel, or gone in a completely different direction to do something else like training for a real career. And then it seemed like they just gave up and invented the Tripokalon/Showcase because they couldn't come up with anything else and figured, "Well no one will give a shit anyway."
