after PLA and SV I can't go back to the boring as shit gen 1 reskin hallway map type games like Platinum and BW.

every time I pick up a game like BW2 and remember it has random encounters I get bored out of my fucking skull and end up dropping the game not even a quarter of the way through.

I know how you feel, I just finished SV and feel completely empty. I tried replaying BW2 and closed it the moment I got gated by an HM. It isn't just the open world but all the other QoL absent from the old games that make them completely unplayable.

The new games feel more fun in the moment but they have no staying power; you can replay the more traditional games a thousand times over because they feel like substantial experiences, but something about gens 8 and 9 makes them feel like one-and-dones. I think the emphasis on catching everything hurt the viability of more specific runs.

This. I replay one or two Pokémon games every year. Beat my second playthrough of Crystal comfily right before PLA and then decided to replay HGSS after that but it was such a yawn fest.
I guess (unsurprisingly) the series have always been shit but when the games finally got an honest-to-god modernization leap, I can't look back anymore without seeing how bad we had it from the start.

I went back to play gen 1 and had fun. I thought gen 2 was still fun. But if there's one thing I appreciate, it's that SV actually has the story not be too intrusive. The only part I would say is kind of long is the beginning. But you can at least tell when to expect story stuff in the game and you choose to interact with it for the most part. It got really fucking annoying when you're stopped practically every five steps by some other character for some stupid ass explanation in some of the other gens.
