Missed shinies

So how many shiny encounters have you allegedly came across compared to how many you've actually registered you found a shiny.

I only remember finding and catching one, but I've apparently battled 3.

The counter doesn't mean encounters, it means how many shinies you have appearing in the dex. Two shiny Pichu will be 1 "battled", one shiny Pichu that evolved to Raichu will be 3 "battled".

Reminder that the total goes up when you evolve a shiny youve caught. For example, I have 2 shinies and evolved one, making my total count 3. Also when you auto battle, your pokemon will not KO a shiny in the field, giving you a chance to battle and catch it normally.

Nope, not how it works either. I have 1 shiny and have only ever seen 1 shiny, a Ditto from a trade. My profile says I have “battled 2”. I have battled 0 in actuality. Never evolved any, hatched any, nor battled any in the wild. Presumably one is the Ditto and the other was something I ran past on my bike in the rain in the dark and never even knew it existed because there is no cue whatsoever. It could have been a capsakid shorter than the grass it was wading through as I glided nearby that never even showed onscreen.

They only count if you actually battle them. My counter did not go up when I ran past my first shiny in the field, only when I battled it. You must have KOd a shiny in battle and not noticed.

Not it either. Not only have I not battled one, or used on in battle for that matter, the counter was 0 before I traded for the Ditto and “1 battled” once I got it. It has nothing to do with actual battles. It’s more like “seen”.

Nope, didn’t accidentally kill one. I’m starting to wonder if it counts things you had with you in picnics with others because I did play with my sister’s shiny eevee when we were experimenting with breeding while grouped up. I hadn’t realized you can get eggs parented by the other person’s pokemon.

Like an anon earlier said, it is more like encountered than actually battled. Yours went up when you traded for it, its in your dex and counted as an encounter. Mons are only added to your dex by trading, catching, battling or by quick battle on the field. You cant quick battle shinies on the field, meaning you have to encounter it in battle physically. So by running past it, you never actually encountered it. Go back through your dex and check forms on their Dex menu to see which Pokemon it was. Tedious, but really the only way to tell.

Not exactly. I have a higher counter in my profile than my dex shows. I’ve never ever entered battle with a shiny involved yet it registers them. One could spawn as you’re gliding over it then despawn before you could have possibly landed due to animation duration and that still counts as a sighting.

Older games just called it “encountered”, didn’t they? That’s most certainly a more accurate term. And yes >>52399830 traded ones count, as do wild ones you didn’t start a battle with but “saw” even if you zoomed past them in the dark.

No it doesnt. Ive ran past shinies in the field, checked my counter and it remained the same. Engaging in battle with the Pokemon in the wild or against a trainer, or trading for one is the only way for it to be registered in your dex, and thats when my counter went from 0 to 1. Otherwize your Pokedex would fill up just by entering and walking past every new Pokemon without engaging them.
